SURMA CIMENT is a development being undertaken by Cementos Molins and Grupo Lafarge, which together control 60% of its capital, alongside the participation of Multilateral Development Banks (IFC, ADB,  20%) and local shareholders (the remaining 20%), whose shares are listed on the Dhaka and Chittagong Stock Exchanges.

The aim of the development is to build the first modern cement factory in Bangladesh, which will have an annual capacity of 1.2 million tonnes. It is to be located in the north-east of the country, near the city of Sylhet. Raw materials will be quarried in India and transported to the factory along a 17-kilometre long conveyor belt.

The factory is currently under construction, and it is expected to begin production during the second half of 2005.
